The string trio ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen was formed in 1999 and is constantly exploring the compelling string trio repertoire, seeking as well to expand it by commissioning works. As two of its current projects, the trio has commissioned pieces by the composers Jukka Tiensuu and Mats Larsson Gothe.
The trio frequently collaborates with other chamber
musicians in forming various quartets and other ensembles. It has played with Bengt Forsberg, Per Tengstrand, Mikael Helasvuo, Christian Ihle Hadland, Martti Rousi, Christoffer Sundqvist and Martin Fröst, among others.
In addition to its own concert projects, the trio has performed at a variety of chamber music festivals. In Sweden, it has been a guest at the Lappland, Junsele, Båstad, Linköping and Grythyttan festivals, as well as at the special music events ”Tengstrand 06” in Växjö and ”MADE in Umeå” in Umeå. It has also played at the Åland, Turku and
Korsholm festivals in Finland and at Bergen and Kristiansand in Norway.
In the last few seasons the trio has performed in Finland, Denmark, Spain and England, (London). The current season will bring it to Finland, Denmark, Germany and Algeria.
Beyond their work in the trio, the members of ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen are well established on the Swedish music scene in their own right.
Cecilia Zilliacus, the winner of the 1997 Swedish Soloist Awards, is extensively engaged as a soloist and chamber musician across the world. She is an associate professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
Johanna Persson is a member of the contemporary music ensemble Gageego!, in addition to her assignments as a chamber musician and soloist. She also teaches viola at the 'Högskolan för scen och musik' at Gothenburg University.
Kati Raitinen combines her work as solo cellist in the Royal opera orchestra in Stockholm with broad engagements in domestic and international chamber music.
The trio was nominated to the Nordic Councils Music Prize 2013 and was awarded the Kurt Persson Cultural Prize in November 2009.
The trio was awarded the Royal Academy
of Music ́s ”Interpretpriset” in 2014, which is the most prestigious prize in Sweden for classical music.
In the summer of 2004, Caprice released the trio’s recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations in an arrangement for string trio and was awarded a Swedish Grammy for the record in February 2005. In the autumn of 2004, Swedish Television broadcast a studio performance by the trio of the Variations.
ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen’s recording of Hermann Berens’ three string trios was released on Intim Musik in May 2007, and together with pianist Per Tengstrand the trio appears on a cd with various music by Mozart.
Three years later the cd with the famous Divertimento by Mozart (KV 563) came out and was very warmly received in both national and international media. This cd also received a Swedish Grammy in January 2011.
Since 2007 ZilliacusPerssonRaitinen are artistic directors of their own chamber music series "Äntligen måndag" ("Monday at last") in the Stockholm Concert House. Guests that have appeared in the series are Philippe Graffin, Dmitri Sitkovetsky, Håvard Gimse, Paavali Jumppanen, Dan Laurin, Cuarteto Quiroga among others.
The trio has also commissioned several pieces by composers SvenDavid Sandström, Fredrik Hedelin, Mirjam Tally, Fredik Österling which appeared on cd, ”Dedicated to”,
Phono Suecia, in 2011.
